Two-thirds of women sufferers are misdiagnosed, say experts

More than a million women suffer from endometriosis but it remains a condition which is misdiagnosed and misunderstood, according to campaigners.

A poll of more than 3,500 sufferers by the National Endometriosis Society found the delay between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis is a staggering 11 years while the time between consulting a GP and diagnosis is eight years.

Two-thirds of women were misdiagnosed with conditions including irritable bowl syndrome and even depression and psychological pain.

Most sufferers were also dissatisfied with their treatment which can include nothing at all, drug regimes and surgery.

Traditional surgery usually involves giving women hysterectomies and even removing their ovaries.
