For infertile couples that are against in vitro fertilization, a new method called Natural Procreative Technology was introduced in Taiwan yesterday.
The new fertilization method is based on the observation of the changes in women’s vaginal discharge, which doctors say can help to determine the period of ovulation.

Doctor Chang Cheng-shen of the obstetric and gynecology department at Cardinal Tien Hospital said NPT is both medically safe and cost-effective because the approach does not involve artificial reproductive procedures that often require some form of surgery.

Chang said that by using the method of teaching women to understand the changes within their own bodies during their menstrual and ovulation cycles, the technique has helped at least nine women in Taiwan to get pregnant.

“Through daily observation of their vaginal discharge, women can better determine the optimal time to get pregnant,” he said, adding that during ovulation, vaginal discharge is usually clearer and stickier than usual.

The viscosity and appearance of the mucus produced by a woman’s cervix also gives an indication of issues relating to hormonal imbalance, Chang said.

Therefore, by carefully charting the daily changes in vaginal discharge, couples can learn essential information about ovulation periods and can check for signs of abnormal hormone levels, the doctor claimed.
