GARLAND, Texas — North Texas women are taking advantage of a new procedure that promises to safely put an end to their periods. Doctors say stopping the excessive bleeding and cramping doesn’t have to require a hysterectomy or surgery now that an in-office procedure is available.
Cryoablation uses a probe to freeze the inside of the uterus–at temperatures nearing negative 150 degrees Fahrenheit, said Baylor Garland Gynecologist Richard Salter.
“We’re freezing the inside lining of the uterus (it) does not affect the muscle, does not affect the ovaries, does not affect the hormones.”
While the temperatures are extreme, Salter said the procedure is not painful.
“By using the freezing unit it will also freeze the pain receptors in the uterus so the procedure is very comfortable for the patient.”
During the procedure 10 minutes of cryoablation is performed in the right and left hand corners of the uterus. Then there is a five- minute application in the center of the uterus.
