Study: Trans Fat Raises Risk Of Infertility

If you’re thinking of trying to get pregnant, you might want to consider avoiding foods with a certain kind of fat.

Trans fats are oils that go through a chemical process called hydrogenation to extend the shelf life of foods. These unhealthy fats have already been linked to an increased risk for heart disease. A new study by the Harvard School of Public Health suggests trans fats could also increase the risk of infertility problems.

Researchers looked at data on nearly 19,000 women and found those who got just 2 percent of their daily recommended calories from trans fat instead of mono-unsaturated fats had double the risk of ovulation-related fertility problems.

The findings still need to be confirmed, but doctors say it’s a good idea to avoid trans fats regardless. That may be soon be a little easier. Several chains, including Wendy’s, KFC, Taco Bell, and Starbucks, have announced plans to eliminate or greatly reduce the amount of trans fat in their food.
