Technique improves on hysterectomy surgeries

Laparoscopic hysterectomy, which is offered at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, has many advantages and is less invasive than the traditional hysterectomy, which involves removal of the uterus and cervix through an abdominal incision, according to the Aberdeen-based hospital.

“LSH was developed to reduce pain and trauma to the body, minimize scarring and shorten recovery time,” said Dr. Christine Stehly of Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates in Aberdeen. “We are using the new technology to remove the uterus and sometimes one or both ovaries through tiny incisions.” Unlike traditional hysterectomies, the cervix is not removed. By leaving the cervix in place, the pelvic floor function is thought to be preserved.

“During this last year, we have had the privilege of offering our patients state-of-the-art technology, which has resulted in minimal disruption of their busy lives,” said Dr. Tage Elizabeth Born of Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates.

With the patient’s hospital stay reduced to a matter of hours with much less pain and a shorter recovery time, women can get back to their families and their workplace much faster. The cost savings from a long hospital stay and weeks away from work are additional bonuses.

During the procedure, a laparoscope and small surgical instruments are inserted through several tiny incisions by the navel and around the lower abdomen. The laparoscope is the instrument that allows the physician to see inside the abdomen. By also using special surgical instruments, the physician is able to carefully separate the uterus from its pelvic connections and from the cervix. The uterus is then removed through one of the incisions.

It’s great that this type of a hysterectomy shortens recovery time after it and it decreases the pain because those are two of the things people are mostly scared of.
